As a Die-Hard REDSKINS fan I feel the need to give my opinion to this notion about changing my favorite team’s name. First of all, I’ve always stood up against any type of discrimination and continue to do so. I’ve done my own research and spoken to some friends who are Native Americans and/or part Native Americans regarding this issue. From what I’ve received and heard is that all of them are OPPOSED to changing the teams name REDSKINS. Yes some are die-hard Redskins fans and some are other teams fans or no teams at all. Their main concern is that to end the broken promises of the Federal Government, the social injustice to Native Americans, many whom are living in “reservations” that is compared to living in a 3rd world country.
To quote one of my friends: “Talking about if your offended by a NFL name; is the least of our concerns when I’m on the reservation. I proudly speak for myself, but I know some have issues with it, I don’t, I know were divided! And if that’s the case; than they should attack all NFL, MLB, NBA names! Us Natives are not on CNN, HLN; etc…we need all the publicity we can get, not worried offended, or moved by the NFL Redskins name, it’s all about the motives, intentions & how you say or present it. The NFL didn’t name the team “REDSKINS” to put down all the Natives in the Nation but as an honorary view that NATIVES WERE KNOWN AS FIGHTERS!! That’s why I fight & an activist for Native issues!! I’m a real life “FIGHTING SIOUX” and NO, I don’t have a problem with that University name either!!”
The PC’s have already divided OUR COUNTRY by taking away the recital of the Pledge of Allegiance in our school, trying to take GOD away from any government buildings, currency, etc.. When or where is it going to end? This country of ours was built on the foundation “For God and Country!” The Freedom our soldiers have fought for and died for is the very essence of our country’s foundation so that we can all live and continue to live with Freedom because “Freedom is NOT FREE!”
I agree that ALL sides should be heard and opinions respected. But isn’t this country about Democracy where the majority’s opinion is greater than those opposed? But why are the voices of the minority that are opposed being heard the loudest and changes being made to our way of life versus those majority who has no problem with the issue? It sounds backwards to me, that the voices of the majority is being shut off and not given their respect.
Now if Congress really want to change the name, let’s start by changing the high school mascot name REDSKINS inside the Navajo reservation in Arizona, change the state name of OKLAHOMA (Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.) Oklahoma from Choctaw, lit. “red people,” from okla “nation, people” + homma “red.” Coined by Choctaw scholar Allen Wright, later principal chief of the Choctaw Nation, and first used in the Choctaw-Chickasaw treaty of April 28, 1866. and all professional, college, high school, etc.. Again this is what the minority would like to see changed.
Please don’t compare the REDSKINS name to that of the derogatory “N” word. Because majority of Native Americans consider the name REDSKINS as HONOR like my friends and many have stated. So to HONOR my friends and all NATIVE AMERICANS, ‘HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!” HTTR4LIFE!!!
This is just my own personal opinion.

Jeffrey Hann Honestly if the team changed the name I would no longer be a fan because it wouldn’t be the same team I grew up rooting for…

Torey Neuzil Great post. Many Natives defend the name. Why is their voice less important than the ones seeking to remove it?

Jeffrey Hann Because the ones fighting for the change want more money than their casinos give them… if there wasn’t the potential for millions they wouldn’t care…
